Chukha District is one of Bhutan's 20 districts (dzongkhag). The major town, Phuentsholing, serves as the gateway city along the primary road connecting India to western Bhutan (known as the Lateral Road). Chukha is recognized as the commercial and financial capital of Bhutan. It is home to the country’s oldest hydropower plant, the Chukha Hydel (completed between 1986 and 1988), and the Tala Hydroelectricity Project, which is the largest power plant in Bhutan. Additionally, Chukha hosts some of the oldest industrial companies in the nation, including Bhutan Carbide Chemical Limited (BCCL) and Bhutan Boards Products Limited (BBPL), making it a significant contributor to the country's GDP.
