Overview

“Bhutan’s Remarkable Butterfly Diversity: A Haven for Ecological Enthusiasts”

Bhutan stands proudly within the top 10% of countries worldwide when it comes to the astonishing number of butterfly species found per unit of area. Boasting a staggering 900 species, this small Himalayan kingdom surpasses both North America, with its 679 species, and Europe, with a mere 440 species. Among these, a notable 140 species have been meticulously catalogued, accompanied by captivating photographs. The crowned jewel among them is the revered Bhutan Glory, rightfully acknowledged as the national butterfly.

The remarkable profusion of butterfly species can be attributed to Bhutan’s diverse and rugged terrain, with some butterflies gracefully taking flight at elevations exceeding 5000 meters above sea level. These delicate creatures, often regarded as indicators of environmental health and biodiversity, are profoundly affected by the availability of their host plants. When these vital plant species vanish, the butterflies thriving in their respective habitats also disappear. Consequently, the extensive array of butterfly species in Bhutan solidifies its standing as an ecological hotspot within the realms of the majestic Himalayas.
