Bhutan is committed to preserving its unique cultural heritage and pristine environment through its “High Value, Low Impact” tourism policy, ensuring a sustainable and enriching experience for visitors.

Key Updates

To strengthen its tourism sector, which contributes significantly to employment, foreign exchange earnings, and economic growth, the Royal Government of Bhutan has introduced several new measures and incentives.

Visa Requirements
  • Tourists from Most Countries: A visa is mandatory for entry, except for nationals of India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives.
  • Indian Citizens: Require a travel permit instead of a visa.
  • Bangladeshi and Maldivian Nationals: Eligible for a visa on arrival.
Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) Incentives
  • The standard SDF of USD 200 per person per day is reduced by 50% to USD 100 for tourists paying in US Dollars.
  • Children aged 6 to 12 years who pay in US Dollars also qualify for the discount.
  • The 24-hour SDF waiver for visitors staying in border towns remains in effect.
Application Process
  • Visitors can apply for a visa or travel permit through the Department of Immigration’s online portal.
  • Licensed tourism service providers, such as Bhutan Travel Experts, can assist with visa processing, travel documents, and trip planning.
Validity of Incentives
  • These measures are effective from 1 September 2023 to 31 August 2027 and will undergo periodic evaluations by the Royal Government to ensure their effectiveness.

This updated policy reflects Bhutan’s commitment to balancing tourism growth with the conservation of its natural and cultural treasures.
