This captivating trek is known by various names, including Jumolhari Trek II, Yaksa Trek, or simply the Jomolhari Loop. Its crowning glory lies in the awe-inspiring vistas of Mount Jumolhari that greet you from the base camp. If your desire is to witness the grandeur of Mount Jumolhari and Jichu Drake without undertaking the arduous journey to Lingzhi and reaching high altitudes, then the Soi Yaksa trek is the perfect choice for you.

While this trek is less demanding than the Jumolhari Trek, it still takes you to elevations where altitude sickness can pose a challenge. You have the option to retrace your steps from the Jangothang base camp, traversing the enchanting turquoise Tshophu Lake at 4,380 meters and crossing the Bhonte La pass at 4,890 meters, ultimately leading you back to Drugyel Dzong. On the second-to-last day of the trek, as you make your way through the Thombu La pass at 4,380 meters, you will be rewarded with a magnificent view of the majestic white mountain range of Kanchenjunga in Sikkim, a sight that truly enriches your journey.

Day 1: Arrival Paro

Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, a T8 Untrodden Travels representative will be waiting outside the arrival terminal, holding a placard with your name on it. The representative will greet you in the traditional manner by offering a Trashi Khadar (greeting scarf), and will be your guide for the entire tour.

Start your day by exploring Rinpung Dzong, a 17th-century Buddhist monastery and fortress, and the National Museum. Next, visit Jangtsa Dumtseg Lhakhang, a temple symbolizing the different stages of rebirth, and climb between its levels to see beautiful displays of Buddhist artwork. End your day by visiting Drukgyal Dzong, a fortress and Buddhist monastery in ruins, now being rebuilt to commemorate significant events in Bhutan’s history.

Day 2: Hike to Taktsang Monastery or Tiger’s Nest

After a hearty breakfast, we will take you to the trailhead for a hike through the stunning pine forest, and stop at the Taktsang cafeteria for light refreshments before continuing to the famous Taktsang Monastery, or the Tiger’s Nest. This awe-inspiring monastery was built in 1684 around Guru Rimpoche’s meditation cave by Gyalse Tenzin Rabgay, the Penlop of Paro. The monastery is perched on the edge of a sheer rock cliff that drops 900m into the valley below. According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava flew here on the back of a flying tiger, Dorji Drolo from Kurtoe Singye Dzong in the east.

After lunch, we will visit Drugyal Dzong, 16 km away from Paro, which was a ruined fortress that played a significant role in Bhutan’s history as it was where the Bhutanese finally defeated the Tibetan invasion. On a clear day, you can see the sacred Mt. Jomolhari, the mountain of the Goddess. Later we will visit Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower built-in 1656, which now houses the National Museum. Below the museum, you’ll find the Rinpung Dzong, which means the “Heap of Jewels.” It was built-in 1646 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and served as the center of civil and religious authority in the valley. The stunning architecture and rich history of these structures make for an unforgettable experience.

Day 3: Paro – Gunitsawa – Thangthangkha

Begin your day with an early breakfast, and then embark on a scenic drive of 35 kilometers north from your hotel in Paro valley to reach Sharna Zampa, the starting point of your trek. As you arrive, your trekking crew will be ready to greet you. Following a brief meeting, you will commence your trail, experiencing a mix of ascents and descents through enchanting pine, oak, and spruce forests. After around 2 hours of continuous hiking and crossing several streams, you will arrive at Shingkharap, a stone house nestled at an altitude of 3110 meters. Here, a delicious hot lunch awaits you on the left side of the river, after crossing the bridge. Continuing on, you will encounter a trail junction where the left path signifies an ancient trade route and invasion path from Tibet, while the right path leads to a wooden bridge (which we will follow). As you ascend through rhododendron forests and cross the bridge once again, you will arrive at our campsite situated at 3750 meters, surrounded by picturesque meadows.

Day 4: Thangthangkha – Jangothang

The day starts with an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the magnificent Mount Jomolhari, which can be seen from the campsite. The trek then continues up the Paro Chhu valley, which gradually widens into patches of alpine meadows and sparse forests. Along the way, you will cross an army checkpoint and be treated to breathtaking views of high mountain ridges and snow-capped peaks. The landscape is dotted with yaks and the homes of their herders. The trek also passes through several charming villages, including Soe, Takethang, and Dangochang.

After reaching Jangothang, one of the most beautiful campsites in the Himalayas, you will have another opportunity to take in the stunning sight of Mount Jomolhari. The mountain dominates the skyline and is an awe-inspiring sight to behold. The campsite is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and pristine alpine scenery, making it an ideal place to relax and unwind.

Dinner and overnight camping will be at Jangothang, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the breathtaking surroundings.

Day 5: Jangothang – Soi Yaksa

Follow the trail as it winds its way north, leading you to the final settlement nestled within the valley. Descend towards the tranquil Paro Chhu river, where you will traverse its waters by crossing a sturdy wooden bridge. Embark on an ascent towards the magnificent Tshophu Lake, situated at an impressive altitude of 4,380 meters. This serene body of water is home to a variety of ruddy-shel ducks, adding a touch of vibrant wildlife to the picturesque landscape.

Continuing your journey, you will encounter a second lake after navigating a slope that leads to a crest. From there, descend into a hidden valley before embarking on a steep climb towards the Bonte La pass, standing tall at an elevation of 4,890 meters. As you conquer the pass, revel in the breathtaking panoramic views that unfold before you.

Once you’ve crossed the pass, the trail meanders downward, crisscrossing through well-trodden yak trails, guiding you to the meandering Dhumzo Chhu river. As you walk downstream, passing by a handful of houses, you will eventually reach a campsite nestled at an elevation of 3,800 meters. Rest and rejuvenate in this idyllic setting, surrounded by nature’s grandeur, as you prepare for the next leg of your unforgettable adventure.

Day 6: Soi Yaksa – Thombu Shong

Descend towards a meandering stream, crossing it as you continue your journey. The trail then leads you up the hillside, guiding you through a small, enchanting valley before emerging onto a picturesque ridge. Here, the path veers southward, taking you past a scattering of huts as you make your way towards the majestic Takhung La, standing tall at an impressive altitude of 4,520 meters. Revel in the magnificence of the surrounding landscapes before embarking on a gentle descent that brings you to Thombu Shong. Nestled at an elevation of 4,180 meters, this serene location is adorned with a few humble yak herder’s huts, offering a glimpse into the traditional way of life in the mountains. Take a moment to absorb the tranquility of the surroundings and cherish the unique experiences that this journey has bestowed upon you.

Day 7: Thombu Shong – Gunitsawa – Thimphu

Ascend from the valley, scaling the heights to reach the Thombu La pass at an elevation of 4,380 meters. From there, begin a gradual descent, gradually lowering yourself to approximately 4,000 meters. The trail then takes a steep plunge, weaving through switchbacks as it descends along the ridge. Eventually, you will arrive at the helipad located at Gunitsawa, nestled at an altitude of 2,730 meters. At this point, your awaiting vehicle will be ready to transport you. Embark on a scenic drive back to Thimphu, where you can rejoice in your return to civilization by indulging in a refreshing shower at your hotel. Let the rejuvenating water cleanse and invigorate you, providing a comforting transition from the ruggedness of the trail to the comforts of urban life.

Day 8: Thimphu Sightseeing

Begin your exploration of Thimphu at the King’s Memorial Chorten, a vibrant and spiritually significant site where devotees gather to offer prayers and spin the Buddhist prayer wheels for good fortune.

Nearby, atop a hill fondly referred to as Buddha Point, you will be awe-struck by the magnificent Buddha Dordenma Statue. This impressive sculpture of the Buddha overlooks the city and the scenic Thimphu Valley.

For a delightful and lighthearted experience, visit the Motithang Takin Preserve, where you can observe the unique Takin, Bhutan’s national animal. If time allows, you can also embark on a scenic drive to the hillside viewpoint below the Bhutan Broadcasting Service Tower, located at an elevation of 2,685 meters (8,809 feet). Afterwards, explore the city’s government-run handicraft emporiums and local craft shops, showcasing the exquisite traditional artwork, jewelry, textiles, and carvings of Bhutan.

Make sure to visit the impressive Tashichho Dzong, the seat of the king and government, as well as the National Library, which houses a vast collection of invaluable Buddhist manuscripts and modern academic books on Himalayan culture and religion.

For an intriguing experience, drop by the Bhutan Post, renowned for its world-famous stamps. Here, you can purchase postcards and stamps, and marvel at the extensive collection of exotic stamps created from materials such as metal and silk, including three-dimensional images and stamps with mini-phonograph records. Day 9: Thimphu – Day excursion to Tango Monastery

Day 10: Thimphu – Punakha

Day 11: Punakha Day Excursion to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten

Embark on a delightful hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, nestled in the serene countryside surrounding Punakha. Cross a charming suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu river and continue your ascent. Leaving Punakha behind, a gradual ascent leads you to the Lawala Pass, situated just 3 kilometers before reaching Pele La, a significant crossover point into central Bhutan. Descending from the Lawala Chorten, a short drive will bring you to the charming Gangtey village, where you can admire the picturesque Black Mountain range.

In the afternoon, immerse yourself in the tranquility of the area as you visit the Gangtey Goenpa, a magnificent monastery. The trail will lead you through serene pine forests, idyllic villages, and sprawling meadows and farms. Along the way, you will pass close to the areas where the cranes roost.
